minkhollow: (what is this i don't even)
I don't really have much to say about Friday, other than: There are several discussions that bear having. Can we, I dunno, have them now and not place all the blame on one factor or another?
Meanwhile, Yuletides-past meme! (Current: Assignment's posted; one potential treat is looking more and more like an NYR every day [I like what I want to tell but I think I've framed it wrong]; another is almost to the minimum and I need to get off my arse; haven't claimed any pinch hits but I've saved a couple.)
link *all* the fic? )
minkhollow: W13: Claudia playing guitar (doesn't remind us of musetta's waltz)
In conclusion, parents. What can you do? (What I can do: Take out my frustrations via fictional family dysfunction! This Christmas Carol plot business is the best idea ever.)

Other than that, I'm giving [community profile] fandom_stocking a try this year; my post is here.
minkhollow: W13: Claudia playing guitar (doesn't remind us of musetta's waltz)
This week in short:
*My Yuletide assignment is Very Nearly Done (there's one last bit Quinn's helping me with), and I've lined up a beta. And I have an idea for a treat!
*Once Upon a Time catch-up happened; I'd fallen three episodes behind and then was told Sunday's was ALL THE RED FEELS, so I caught up on Tuesday. ALLLLLLL THE RED FEELS. :D :D :D :D :D
*Quinn's back decided to go 'hey, so that chair you were sitting in yesterday? NO ME GUSTA.' Officially diagnosed as a muscle strain (I'm just glad it wasn't a kidney stone).
*And then I went to do laundry and THE PRICES WENT UP. Previously I could get four loads out of a typical six out of a roll of quarters; now it's three, with a random dollar left over. CANNOT EVEN. I might have to start combining sheets/towels with something, if I can cram all that into the washer.
Meanwhile, Fic Friday! (For newcomers: Twitter fic! Prompts given and filled on Twitter. Some of these are Milliways- or other-RP-inspired crossovers.)
lots of things, including some of those Red feels )
minkhollow: (here at the end of all things)
Yet Another Frankenstorm Check-In: We're just fine! Still have power and everything. The worst we got here was wind and a bit of rain.
The same can't be said for the shore; the governor's pretty pissed that people didn't listen when he told them last week to evacuate. So we're going 'nrrrrrrr' and hoping a couple of our favorite coastal places come out okay in the end. Quinn was off work yesterday and is off again today, but it's okay enough outside that we're going to brave heading across the street later on.
If anyone's evacuating southern CT (possibly also New York, but that bears more transit difficulties than usual, at the moment), we have a couch in Hartford, but likely only room for one person.
Hope everyone else is doing all right.
minkhollow: (leap of faith)
LJ, LJ, LJ. Will you ever learn? There are new beta shenanigans afoot, and it's... well. I'll let it speak for itself. (Also, guess what they first rolled out in public on the Russian side of things?)
My favorite comment is from one of said Russian users (I love Chrome's translate button): "If this is your idea of a joke, you have a very poor sense of humor."
Given that, I think I'm going to stop crossposting to LJ effective November 30th. It's my 10th LJversary; there's something nicely symmetrical about that. Still trying to figure out what that means for lower_tadfield, but I'll consult the comm first, whatever it is.
In happier news, there wasn't much Fic Friday (now technically Fic Saturday, but whatevs), but it did happen!
Fic inna sentence! So fresh the... I dunno how to sustain this. )
minkhollow: (leap of faith)
Someone hit the car (parked in the parking lot, fortunately; no witnesses, but that makes it a little easier in attempting to run down leads) the other day. Back bumper's badly beaten, but hey, at least the car still drives.
But mostly: ARGH. (On the other hand, I've done a hell of a lot of Calling People I Don't Know over the last couple days. For me, that's a big thing.)

Meanwhile, Fic Friday!
in which fics are written on Friday )
minkhollow: Rent: Mark points and says NO (in conclusion: no.)
Dear Macy's: SEASONS OF LOVE IS NOT A SONG TO SELL JEWELRY TO. Mark points and says 'no,' and so do I. (Well, okay, I mostly yell at the TV every time I see the commercial, but still.)
Got The Lost Hero from the library this afternoon. Am already six chapters in, but I was kinda expecting that; Riordan's stuff is hard to put down. (Also, Hephaestus kid! Also, diverse cast!) In conclusion, as last time, OMG(s).
Letting my [livejournal.com profile] yuletide assignment percolate for a few days was the right idea; I know a lot more about it now. Still need to do some canon review, but that's all right.
minkhollow: (actual reality)
I have been wandering around in circles lately, and I'm sick of it. One of these circles is never posting anything here.
(Basically, I think part of the cure will be getting out of the damn house for something other than work. Note to self, see if there's a gaming shop in the area.)
I finished The Last Olympian in the middle of the month. In conclusion: OMG(s). Picked up The Demigod Files (still working on that one) and The Time Machine, which I need to get back to before the loan runs out on me or renew. Current work read is Graceling; I like the concept, but I'm not sure I'm sold on the plot and characters who aren't Po, and also I wish the author would just stop. With the sentence fragments. That are everywhere, including where 'list that follows a colon' should go. spoiler? )
And in conclusion: LOL TROPICAL STORM/DEPRESSION GASTON SOMEONE FILK THIS
minkhollow: (that other otp)
*It must be Friday. I never could get the hang of Fridays.
*It was Us Vs. The Machines at work this morning; I think the registers had a conspiracy going. (And work!Tubes were down for a while, which... may or may not have something to do with the weather up north? I don't know if that's based in MA, but it wouldn't surprise me.)
*Local alumnae club's dinner thing was Sunday. Pretty awesome, I think.
*We have Milk from Netflix; I watched it yesterday. I don't usually go in for things that I know are gonna end badly, but I thought that was one I needed to see. Excellent movie, that one.
*I am wondering why my sweatshirt smells like tap water on the coast. It's been washed since the last time it would've been anywhere near a coast (if I even took it along).
*I had to drop out of a fic thing because Vincenia has pretty much taken over my writing brain. I... actually like that state of affairs.
minkhollow: (i'll melt the damn snow)
I am so done with the Snowpocalypse. Unfortunately, I don't think it's done with us. (It's not making February go by any faster, I can say that much.)
In happier news, the [livejournal.com profile] quinby poked me in the direction of St. Trinian's; I watched it this afternoon, and I highly approve. Dear Britain: Region 1 DVD release pls?
minkhollow: (phoebe's song)
Things that please me:
*[livejournal.com profile] isurrendered, for all your TV meme needs. I WANT SOME OF THESE SHOWS LIKE BURNING, GUYS.
*HEY LOOK I GOT SOMETHING PUBLISHED AGAIN.
*Actually managing this responsible adulthood thing and applying for stuff. I may in fact get the hang of this after all.
Thing that pleases me less: I'm tired of living in the Snowpocalypse. Yes, we didn't get as much here as, say, DC, but STILL. RIDICULOUS.
minkhollow: (the complete blueprints)
Did my taxes earlier. \o/
Got a haircut on Monday; my high school was doing... not quite Locks of Love, since they only wanted eight inches and not ten? But still, donation. I have Jane Lane hair again. There's a picture, but I have yet to get it somewhere I can post.
the Dewey Decimal System meme, as it is way appropriate )
In other news, my parents need to back off, and I need to stop slacking. There are problems on both ends of this argh-fest, I freely admit.
minkhollow: (what a crazy random happenstance!)
Dear ten-year-old self,
Sticking the things around the stickers to your mirror? Was not, in fact, an inspired decorating choice. If anything, it was quite the opposite.
Love, you 13 years in the future, who just scraped that off of said mirror.
I think it's been a pretty accomplished detox spree, considering I only had two half-Swiffers to work with; most everything else in there needs one, as it's not wooden, so Endust is out. But there's a floor around my bed and across the front of the room, and I have a nightstand and dresser! Haven't seen the top of that since at least last year!
Also, I found three Barnes & Noble gift cards in my wallet last night, so I went on a shopping spree. I have a number of goodies headed my way, ranging from the latest Pratchett to one of [livejournal.com profile] misslucyjane's books. Fun times!
minkhollow: Steven Banks: Elvis gotta write a speech now (elvis... gotta write a speech now)
Some of earlier crisis averted, but on the whole, today still has its pink slip. I recommend it not let the door hit it on its way out.
On the bright side, Vincenia is over 30,000 words now. Yes, only ~3000 of that is this year, but \o/ nonetheless.
(And the shiny from last week remains fun. I figure I'm allowed to poke at it a bit every now and then as long as I also poke at what I'm supposed to be poking.)
minkhollow: view from below a copper birch at Mount Holyoke (don't mess with the claudiometer)
Brain. VINCENIA.
Note how that does not sound anything like 'Warehouse 13 hijinks based on the killer concert.'
...you're going to make me do it anywa now that I've started, aren't you.
::facepalms:: VINCENIA, SELF. FOCUS.
minkhollow: view from below a copper birch at Mount Holyoke (don't mess with the claudiometer)
Today is less awesome. (We're not talking about this morning. ::EPIC FACEPALM::)
I have a sinking feeling we're going to put the dog down next week; my money's on Tuesday, that being Dad's day off. He's in denial about it, as he usually is when it comes to dogs, but going to Egypt won't help anyone.
And much as I say I won't miss certain aspects of the dog... we've had him since I was eleven. So it still sucks. And the job hunt sucks, and I think I'm PMSing, and... really, there's not much I can do about a lot of things.
Trying to figure out what my [livejournal.com profile] getyourwordsout pledge for next year will be, since I'd like to do it again. I might do a single-project one, since I really do need to get cracking on Vincenia and environs.
And now, work.

THE FANFICTION LOVE MEME

Because why not.

Also, dear Craigslist job ad people: It does not exactly instill confidence when I have what sounds like an autoreply and amounts to 'click here to apply!' less than 30 seconds after I email. Also, could some of you possibly actually be in this area, upon further Googling?
Plague is mostly gone, but not quite entirely, yet. It's down to a Cough of Annoying.
In brighter news: THINKGEEK CATALOG IN THE MAIL. Also, I am on to my Yule assignment and it is fun.
minkhollow: view from below a copper birch at Mount Holyoke (sunday in the sunset leaves)
Dear USA:
So, White Collar. Not a bad show. Fun premise, police procedurals that aren't about dead bodies OMG, cute Matt Bomer, that's all well and good.
But I have a question.
Was it really so hard to mention where Diana disappeared to that you didn't bother, when you wrote out the Pilot Probie of Awesome? Seriously, the smartest person on Peter's team shouldn't vanish without a trace, not to mention the issues in having a kickass lesbian character in one episode and disappearing her in the next. Diana's awesome enough that you could've at least said 'oh, she got promoted/reassigned/thingy.'
One line. It's not hard.
Sincerely,
a disappointed fan.

(I want the fic where Diana saves the day and gets the girl, y'all.)
