minkhollow: (burn down that bridge)
Things I need to do tomorrow:

*call store here, talk to GM (call back first week of July; things look good to go)
*email guy about apartment (holy crap we're viewing an apartment on Friday!!!!!)
*process dishes
*process laundry
*make grocery list
*unearth kitchen island

*EP of some kind, possibly

Things found today: Bell, Book and Candle on DVD. Totally pounced on a movie that's as old as my father, but it's a damn good one. (Also, main characters never share my name in things, but this one does! Also also: Kim Novak. Your argument is invalid.)
minkhollow: (phoebe's song)
So, the Things that are Afoot: I'm moving to Connecticut this weekend.
It's been a long time coming, and I'm very glad to finally be getting around to it. My last day at work was Wednesday; I'll possibly be transferring to another store up there (the chain makes it ridiculously easy) and definitely looking for full-time work, which should be much easier once I'm in the place I'm looking for a job.
I have one more box for 'things to be shipped later' and no idea what to put in it; I think that's a sign I have too much crap. XD
I'm looking forward to being in the same area as my friends again. I'm doubly looking forward to finally not being in a long-distance relationship anymore, it only took for freaking ever. But it's well worth the wait.
(Also, I need to actually get this song at some point. It does that... 'grabs you by the heart and doesn't let go' thing.)
minkhollow: W13: Claudia playing guitar (doesn't remind us of musetta's waltz)
I thought maybe if I have a client that works for DW, I'll remember to use it more often. And so, here we are!
Otherwise, I'm glad to see the back of the Christmas music at work (it wouldn't be so bad if they mixed it in with the usual lot, and I still don't know what makes 'these are a few of my favorite things' a Christmas song) and super-excited for Yuletide to open.
(And retooling an abandoned Milliplot as a fic, which is FUNTIMES.)
minkhollow: Robert Redford pointing, from Sneakers (sometimes i don't understand myself)
I've come to the conclusion that I only post when I have a meme/other handy reason to do so because I don't feel like my life is worth writing about.
So, a couple things of note:
*Work remains work-like, especially since we're in holiday prep mode. Job search... also remains job-search-like (and very, very frustrating in this climate, esp. since I'm trying to focus on somewhere I'm not).
*My grandfather had epic surgery in mid-September; he made it through that all right, but his doctor's told him to make sure everything's in order. I... will not be entirely surprised if we're having a funeral before the year's out. (I'm not trying to sound callous about it. It's just... dude's 81 and has a zillion health problems. I've made peace with it, I think. Though I reserve the right to say otherwise when it happens.)
*Got sucked into Once Upon a Time; looking forward to seeing where that goes.
*Upgraded to an actual purse! I've been using my old CD bag for ages now because it fit everything, but... really, self (also, since I got the iPod hookup for my car, I haven't actually played any of the CDs in said bag). It's one of Mom's old purses, but it'll do.
*Writing... needs to be a thing that happens. Prompts Accepted Here!
minkhollow: (live long and prosper)
Oh, LJ. These have been some special shenanigans. (Or perhaps it's more 'oh, annoying hackers.')
House's Tubes and phone came back on as mysteriously as they turned off the day after my last post (since then, I've just been full of my usual postingfail). Technician who came out to investigate said we were the third house to report that happening.
Had Baby's First Jury Duty a couple weeks ago! It was a very interesting experience (and I blame it for the 'team of unlikely heroes meets on jury duty' aspect of my Heroes-meets-Alphas wacky dream sequence yesterday morning. The dream also included a commercial for a truly hilarious-sounding Graham Norton Show, and then I woke up). More on that later, perhaps.
Mid-July seems to have it in for my car, which stopped running last week (just when I really needed the AC, of course). Might be the battery, might be the alternator (again). We're still mid-diagnosing.
Work is the usual back-to-school fun, with the added layer of someone at the top of the chain marking us down as starting back later than literally every other store in the state - so we're having to basically honor two ads at once. V. annoying.
I am really enjoying the current season of Warehouse 13.
minkhollow: (two generations of win)
And now, an attempt at an update that's not a meme:
Parents are going to Texas for the week. I have the house to myself (other than the dog), which is always nice.
I have a SHINY NEW PHONE (and with it a shiny new number). It is a thing of Win.
I'm learning some new stuff at work, which makes me immensely happy. It's kinda fun.
And writing-shaped things are happening.
Knowing me, there will probably be a meme at some point. Because this is me. But that time is not now. In fact, I think now is lunchtime (though that is an illusion).
minkhollow: W13: Claudia playing guitar (doesn't remind us of musetta's waltz)
I keep thinking 'wait, where the hell did February go?' But, oh yeah, vacation to Hartford in the middle. Vacations will do that. It was a vacation of epic win all around (other than the leaving part, but that's standard) - and, oddly, a vacation of talking to awesome people on the planes.
Random observation from said: It's funny how changing your daily coat, even if you change absolutely nothing else about how you're dressing, can make you feel a lot different. I put away my kinda-biker-jacket thing in favor of my wool coat, since there were several points on vacation where I needed to look Respectable; I have yet to get the jacket back out. I feel a lot more grown-up, which is a Good Thing, I think.
Random observation from work: People write the weirdest things on 'try me!' pads for pens (oddly, if one person writes 'try me!' others will also write 'try me!'). Yesterday's winner, in two different handwritings:
Jesus <-- Tommy Peacock?
(And finally, I am perhaps far too amused by the keywords I gave this icon.)
minkhollow: view from below a copper birch at Mount Holyoke (his name pirate guy!)
I could easily spend all of my work discount-coupon-thing on movies; there's some good stuff on the DVD rack at the moment, and it's half-price until the 31st. I probably won't, though. There's nothing there that I absolutely have to have OMG, and it'd defeat the purpose of paring down.
(It'll probably go toward a new laptop fan. I've screwed up the bit where the cord plugs into the old one, so it doesn't stay on without a lot of effort.)
Also, the website I've been proofreading for since July is looking for some more editors. It's not restricted to Americans, though the content is foreign op/eds about America, and there's some interesting stuff that comes down the pipe (I edited a translation of something originally written by Gorbachev, right before New Year's). So if that sounds like something that'd interest any of the proofreader types on my flist, check it out.
minkhollow: (happy hogswatch!)
So last year, when they started the 'all Christmas all the time' thing at work, I wished they'd add a few more Christmas carols (here meaning the 'so how about that Jesus guy! he's awesome!' songs) to the mix. This year, they have... but they also haven't played anything newer than the Beach Boys. Still feels like they're only playing about five different songs.
Finished Graceling the other day. It's not a bad story, but the sentence fragments where there should've been a list-in-one-sentence kinda drove me nuts.
My [livejournal.com profile] yuletide assignment is almost done! The extra time to percolate was exactly what it needed. Also, I think I have achieved a MYSTERY. \o/
Have revamped my resume. Hopefully that will help spur me on in my Epic Job Hunt o' Doom.
minkhollow: (that other otp)
*It must be Friday. I never could get the hang of Fridays.
*It was Us Vs. The Machines at work this morning; I think the registers had a conspiracy going. (And work!Tubes were down for a while, which... may or may not have something to do with the weather up north? I don't know if that's based in MA, but it wouldn't surprise me.)
*Local alumnae club's dinner thing was Sunday. Pretty awesome, I think.
*We have Milk from Netflix; I watched it yesterday. I don't usually go in for things that I know are gonna end badly, but I thought that was one I needed to see. Excellent movie, that one.
*I am wondering why my sweatshirt smells like tap water on the coast. It's been washed since the last time it would've been anywhere near a coast (if I even took it along).
*I had to drop out of a fic thing because Vincenia has pretty much taken over my writing brain. I... actually like that state of affairs.
minkhollow: HP/Dr. Horrible: Daily Prophet header; NEXT UP: WHO'S GAY? (it's the perfect story)
So we were on fire at work on Tuesday! Or, well, a belt in the furnace vent came loose and the burning rubber set off the fire alarm. So that made for an exciting morning.
I finished His Majesty's Dragon over lunch today. FUN TIMES, and also Temeraire is possibly my favorite dragon ever. (Temeraire is up against Kazul, in that regard, and therefore holding his own in strong competition. XD)
Also: [livejournal.com profile] help_haiti. Still awesome. Drabblethings on offer inna Lightning Round.
minkhollow: (whiskey tango foxtrot)
GIP and subject line brought to you by last night's funtimes. (I am so glad I gave into the temptation.)
And now, for something completely different: 'We Wish You a Merry Christmas' is a bloody weird song. "Merry Christmas! NOW GIVE ME SOME DAMN DESSERT OR I WON'T LEAVE YOU ALONE, I CAN WAIT ALL DAY." (I am also so glad tomorrow's the likely end of the Christmas music at work.)
Also also, there is a [livejournal.com profile] yuletide story up in [tiny fandom I nominated]! Whether it's my request or the other requester's, I don't know, BUT EITHER WAY.
On that note, I think I should be off to Borders. Weather's likely to be sucktastic tomorrow, or I'd go after work then.
minkhollow: (plot bunny troubles)
Barring someone calling off, I... appear to have a weekend off. I think that's the first time that's happened since I got the job. Did some Christmas shopping after work; more to come Sunday. Haven't decided between Oxford or Borders (or both, but they're in opposite directions, is the thing) yet.
Dad turned on Andrew Bird on his iPod, on the drive home from dinner last night. That... seemed to be exactly what I needed, so I'm following suit on the big computer tonight. I do not, as predicted, miss the dog howling because OMG THERE ARE VIOLINS.
[livejournal.com profile] yuletide uploading is up! I've got my assignment and Yulebunny posted; now it's back to poking at the next Yulebunny. (Which is terrifying because [character] says things like [COMPLETELY RIDICULOUS PHRASE] and I might have to capture that and I'm not sure I can. But it's one of the things I love most about [fandom], so! Cryptic parenthetical is cryptic.)
minkhollow: (leap of faith)
So. I'm not at a basketball game (Miami-UC tonight), nor am I at a concert (Barenaked Ladies et al at the Taft). But that's okay.
My [livejournal.com profile] yuletide fic is back from beta and approved, that was some of the fastest app turnaround I've seen in ages, and I got some other good news today - full squee will be divulged later, on that front. So I'm calling it a good day.
(Subject line is from a thing on the radio this evening: Christmas carols to the tune of The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Between the overdose of Christmas carols at work and the fact that the song works best in small, infrequent doses... I approve.)
minkhollow: Steven Banks: Elvis gotta write a speech now (elvis... gotta write a speech now)
*[livejournal.com profile] hogswatchfic is open for business; sign-ups run until the 13th, and fics are due the 31st. If you missed Yuletide/are avoiding it/just want to write Generic Winter Holidays fic for someone, give it a go!
*Snow on the ground and my profile! Thanks, [livejournal.com profile] gehayi!
*I'm passing up a concert on Thursday, partly because I first heard about it Saturday. I'd love to see BNL again, but they're sharing the bill with three other bands, so it's not really a sound investment.
*Heat's been down at work, which is where the subject line comes in. Yesterday there were space heaters, which made it better; I'm hoping it'll be functional again when I go back Wednesday.
*And now... the dog.
in which the news is not surprising, but still sucks )
*Yuletide assignment might be finished. I need to type it up and assemble a beta squad before I know for sure. Oh, [fandom], how I've missed you.
*But first, I need to assemble something to go with [livejournal.com profile] quinby's birthday card.
minkhollow: (burn down that bridge)
Have engaged in some flist clean-up. Seemed like it was time; it's largely nothing personal. If you still want to read, you're not likely to miss much, since I generally don't lock things.
Friday was... actually pretty quiet, by the time I got to work. I'll take that.
I feel less full of Fail on the job-hunt front; seems three-quarters of Harvard grads from my year are having trouble finding jobs. So some of it's just that I graduated at a Very Bad Time. (Yeah, I still need to work on my job-hunt ethic on the whole, but it's not all me. XD) Incidentally, if anyone's got recommendations of things that've worked for them, I'd appreciate it; I think part of my problem is that I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing.
Have conquered Yulebunny, which will hopefully free up the brainpan to tackle my actual assignment.
minkhollow: (most triumphant)
THE HELL, BENGALS, YOU HAD THAT. Seriously, don't taunt me by being good and then suck. (Gratuitous... Tag Post? As I thought of a Cincinnati-things tag.)
Work continues apace. Friday's going to be... exciting, I've no doubt. (But I'm not protesting too much, since I'm not going in at five AM.
I've actually been working on an original thing! Yulebunnies got sidelined for a bit, as this one has a more urgent deadline if I want to send it in (donation, not paid piece, but... why not try?).
And GIP, as I am a shameless enabler of [livejournal.com profile] dawning_star's wacky crossovers.
minkhollow: (wtf mate)
- We got absolutely slammed in the last hour today, probably because people decided they needed stuff after the football game.
+ Speaking of, what is this nonsense where the Bengals are actually good this year? I don't know what to do with this!
- So I pulled into the driveway and went to put my windows up... and they went up v. slowly, and the stereo cut out. And then my poor car wouldn't start again. Fortunately, I'm off tomorrow and Monday, and Dad's off tomorrow, so hopefully we'll be able to get to the bottom of this.
+ [livejournal.com profile] yuletide fever lingers.
+ Working on something for [livejournal.com profile] jossverse_bb. Funtimes!
Aaaaaaand GIP.
minkhollow: (but remember: i'm aquaman!)
[Error: unknown template qotd]

Actually, the managers at work were talking about letting people come in in costume for the day. If I don't go in that day, I probably won't dress up; there's not much other cause to here, at the moment, and we never get trick-or-treaters at our house.
What I'm going to do depends on whether I give in and get my hair cut before Halloween. If I do, I'm resurrecting my Jane Lane costume from GYGO. If not... well, Ziva's easy enough to pull together on the fly. (And half the 'costume' would be mixed idioms. XD)
