minkhollow: W13: Claudia playing guitar (doesn't remind us of musetta's waltz)
In conclusion, parents. What can you do? (What I can do: Take out my frustrations via fictional family dysfunction! This Christmas Carol plot business is the best idea ever.)

Other than that, I'm giving [community profile] fandom_stocking a try this year; my post is here.
minkhollow: W13: Rebecca/Jack snogging in the car (our love is a love'll not fade away)
Yes, thank you, Viking hordes, I really needed that when I had absolutely no materials for that cause with me.
But other than that, and... you know, the fact that I was traveling for the purpose of funeral services... this visit hasn't been too bad. My cousin said she could tell I'm happier now that I've moved.
and now, a picture )
And now, for something completely different: Operation Let's Build a Goddamn Tesla Museum. If this doesn't blow past the goal by the end of the first week I will be very surprised. (Also, they should sell the Tesla > Edison bumper stickers on their own.)
minkhollow: (do not go gentle)
So last Sunday my grandfather was not doing well at all. Tuesday, he was doing worse. Yesterday, Mom called to see about making arrangements for me to go back to Ohio.
Today, Dad called and said the important stuff is happening Thursday (I never could get the hang of Thursdays). I've booked a ticket, leaving Wednesday and coming back on Sunday.
(Part of me was expecting him to hang on until Saturday - that was my grandmother's birthday; it would have been very poetic. As it is, yesterday was the 48th anniversary of his second marriage, and it's amazing he stuck it out that long. ooooor their anniversary was Wednesday and Mom's mother's birthday was the 20th??? I don't know, if things in this family don't happen on the 19th (which is booked) I don't know when in August it is. XD)

In happier news, WE ARE MOVED IN. We even have a little furniture! (Haven't put the bed together yet, but the mattress isn't here yet either, so. XD)
minkhollow: (not to be taken away)
Since my grandfather will not go to hospice, hospice has come to him. (Frankly, I think this should have happened months ago; my grandmother was never prepared to be a caregiver, and I think she's finally stopped pretending she can do it by herself.) So who knows what's going to happen from here, but at least he'll be a little more comfortable.
Meanwhile: #FicFriday!
so far: Percyverse, W13/XMFC, Disc, Disc/W13, XMFC/Once Upon a Time )
minkhollow: W13: Claudia playing guitar (doesn't remind us of musetta's waltz)
Meme time!

1. Go to page 77 (or 7) of your current manuscript.
2. Go to line 7
3. Copy down the next 7 lines – sentences or paragraphs – and post them as they’re written.
4. Encourage other people to do it!

The story I'm currently working on is my queer_fest fic, which is... nowhere near seven pages as of yet. So instead, you get a snippet of another work in progress:
a fairly nondescript bit of a W13 fic )
In other news: Of course Mercury's in retrograde now! No wonder it took like five tries to work out who was trying to start my grandparents' lawnmower (thanks for the follow-through, Dad...)! (Mostly throwing this is for gratuitous tag use. I don't get the chance much.)
Also, dear Once Upon a Time: Roger Daltrey did not guest star in sunday's episode. He had a cameo. It was a hilarious cameo, but that's all it was.
minkhollow: (do not go gentle)
If you'd asked me six months ago if I thought my grandfather would be the last of his brothers alive, I would have said no - partly because that was right after he had a major surgery, partly because the other of the five brothers was the youngest.
And then Mom's uncle was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer... I think a month ago? And things went downhill for him from there. Two days ago, he told his family to move him to hospice; he died this morning. Mom and Dad are going down over Mom's spring break, and they're having the services then so she can be there; my grandfather's still carrying on as well as he has been lately, but he's in no shape to travel himself.
In the immortal wisdom of Heywood Banks, may you never have a cranky pancreas, guys.
minkhollow: PRIVATE SIGN: DO NOT READ (private sign)
So my parents have been cleaning out my grandfather's model-trains room as his Christmas present (as of the second round yesterday, you can see the floor in there, which is monumental); this way it gets done while he's around to tell us what's probably worth something and what's not. They've brought a few things home, including a copy of his birth certificate.
some tidbits, in which I mostly say 'oh, 1930' )
Other stuff includes what appears to be my grandmother's old jewelry box, as there's various necklaces, a broken watch and her class ring in it. (She died when my mother was two - cancer of the I-don't-know-what she left untreated because she was pregnant at the time.) I like the box itself, and Mom said I can keep it, so!
minkhollow: Robert Redford pointing, from Sneakers (sometimes i don't understand myself)
I've come to the conclusion that I only post when I have a meme/other handy reason to do so because I don't feel like my life is worth writing about.
So, a couple things of note:
*Work remains work-like, especially since we're in holiday prep mode. Job search... also remains job-search-like (and very, very frustrating in this climate, esp. since I'm trying to focus on somewhere I'm not).
*My grandfather had epic surgery in mid-September; he made it through that all right, but his doctor's told him to make sure everything's in order. I... will not be entirely surprised if we're having a funeral before the year's out. (I'm not trying to sound callous about it. It's just... dude's 81 and has a zillion health problems. I've made peace with it, I think. Though I reserve the right to say otherwise when it happens.)
*Got sucked into Once Upon a Time; looking forward to seeing where that goes.
*Upgraded to an actual purse! I've been using my old CD bag for ages now because it fit everything, but... really, self (also, since I got the iPod hookup for my car, I haven't actually played any of the CDs in said bag). It's one of Mom's old purses, but it'll do.
*Writing... needs to be a thing that happens. Prompts Accepted Here!
minkhollow: Rent: Mark points and says NO (in conclusion: no.)
So I got home from work to find that the Tubes had died sometime between this morning and then; after an hour or so of constant busy signals on the landline (which I first chalked up to 'they must know there's a problem here'), I realised that was down too. They're through the same provider.
I passed the tech support call off to Mom, and Dad got home just in time for her to say "Well, I'm not thrilled that I have to wait until Thursday..." He proceeded to step in on the call, get bumped back to hold when he asked for a manager, and... last resolution I heard was that someone's calling them back in two or three hours. So I booked it for the land of free wifi (and not-free dinner).
I mean, I could almost understand leaving just the Internet down for three days - while more people do work from home these days, it's more of a luxury than a necessity. But the phone too?
Mark points and says NO.
([livejournal.com profile] jenerator, if you need to call Mom, call her cell.)
minkhollow: (idk my bff Doc?)
Last week, my parents came home with not one, but two puppies. (So: not actually romantic and actually less of a surprise than the last dog was, but.) They're akita-mastiff mixes; officially, they're Buffy and Willow, but I've been tempted more than once to call them both Pete.
(This is not an Adventures of Pete and Pete reference, except for when it is, in which case Buffy is Big Pete.)
minkhollow: (two generations of win)
And now, an attempt at an update that's not a meme:
Parents are going to Texas for the week. I have the house to myself (other than the dog), which is always nice.
I have a SHINY NEW PHONE (and with it a shiny new number). It is a thing of Win.
I'm learning some new stuff at work, which makes me immensely happy. It's kinda fun.
And writing-shaped things are happening.
Knowing me, there will probably be a meme at some point. Because this is me. But that time is not now. In fact, I think now is lunchtime (though that is an illusion).
minkhollow: (holy wood magic)
A meme, for something a little more cheerful: Give me any of my characters, and ask me to put them in any of my other fandoms. Throw in a song lyric for spice, and I'll come up with a short fic combining the two!
(I reserve the right to work on this over the weekend.)
Following up on things: I did get a gift fic after all (I AM EXPECTING AWESOMENESS), and the dog did not come home in the Cone of Shame so much as with it. So far we haven't had to make use of it, either.
minkhollow: (leap of faith)
Self, you are not allowed to jump up and down on the poor poor AO3 servers to see if you have a gift fic yet. (Instead I am jumping up and down on the fandom spreadsheet. THERE WILL BE AWESOMENESS.)
(Also: Go go gadget writer YOU CAN DO IT!)
I seem to have become the go-to [fandom] beta-reader by accident, but there ain't nothin' wrong with that. All three stories I've read in it are epic win, as were the one in [different fandom] and the one in [fandom I don't know, I was just the technical picker].
Dog went to the vet to have some fatty cysts removed, and will apparently be coming back in the Cone of Shame. The heart of my Christmas shopping is done, and... that's about all there is to report.
minkhollow: view from below a copper birch at Mount Holyoke (my name is Steven)
So on Sunday Mom went to get herself a soda, and spotted someone dumping a couple kittens by the side of the road. She and Dad staged a rescue despite her allergies (I never thought I'd hear a cat meow in this house); due to said allergies and the cold weather, we couldn't keep them overnight, so they took 'em to the shelter, where they will hopefully go to good home(s) soon.
...and where my parents promptly fell in love with a dog. ::facepalm::
I am still not prepared to be a dog-having household again. I expect I will be about three months from now. But she's a very calm dog, at least.
Meanwhile, a very pretty thing: Amy Pond in the style of Alphonse Mucha. mmmmmmm, Art Nouveau.
minkhollow: (look at my wrist!)
Things of note lately:
*My grandfather's home from the hospital for the second time in slightly over a month.
*How excited am I for new Warehouse 13 on Tuesday? THIS EXCITED.
*I'm extremely late in this, but I'm jumping on the Percy Jackson bandwagon. Finished The Lightning Thief this morning and semi-promptly went to the library for The Sea of Monsters. In conclusion: OMG(s). Seriously, you know you're in for a treat when the first chapter title is "I Accidentally Vaporize My Pre-Algebra Teacher."
*Awesome Ladies Ficathon. Truly a thing of awesome.
*...I have 98 pages in my Vincenia file. O_O (Admittedly, it's 97-and-a-bit, at the moment, but. STORY, I HEART YOU.)
*Got myself a copy-editing gig! \o/
*Also: I filled my car tires almost entirely by myself tonight. I have ongoing struggles with getting an accurate read from my pressure gauge, so the fact that that's not where I had to ask Dad for help counts as Epic Win, in my book.
minkhollow: (destiny! destiny!)
(The scene: The couch. Mom and I are watching Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban; Sirius and wolfy!Remus just started fighting.)

Mom: So... the wolf kills the dog?
me: No.
Mom: ...The dog kills the wolf.
me: No. Neither of them die in this one.
Mom: Oh, I thought Sirius died.
me: That's two movies from now. He falls through a drapery.
Mom: ...::blank stare::
me: It's supposed to be the ~*~Veil of Deeeath!~*~ ::spirit fingers:: But yeah, most of the fans are right there with you on the blank stare.
minkhollow: (wtf mate)
So Mom found this on Facebook, and I finally got around to having a look. In conclusion: I have no idea what's going on in the video, BUT THE SONG IS AMAZING (but I've known that part since I was five).
Fear is Never Boring - the Raisins
I highly recommend it, if mainly for the audio portion of the day's entertainment.
minkhollow: (that other otp)
Meme time, because why not: If you could have me write a fic specifically for you, what would it be like? Fandom, characters/pairing, genre, plot elements, kinks... what's your ideal fic from me?
We're separating my ornaments from my parents' as we take stuff off the tree (hopefully it'll be of some use before December...). I have approx. a crapton of angels.
Tomorrow, I think I might try to detox my room (it's in desperate need of cleaning, partly so I can get my piles of stuff out of the living room and help Mom with her zen) and try to watch the Warehouse 13 episodes I missed over the summer. And keep poking at Vincenia; I think my writing spirits are buoyed by (a) finally having the nifty spreadsheet to keep track of the numbers and (b) having the I Do Two contract back in my hands. (PUBLISHING SQUEE, y'all.)
minkhollow: (happy hogswatch!)
[the scene: The dining room we don't actually eat in, where we have the tree up. We're opening presents. There's a for-the-whole-family present from my sister and brother-in-law, which I gave to Mom since she'd had the least to open so far.]
Mom: ::opens the DVD-shaped package:: ...Well. That's an interesting choice.
me: What?
Mom: ::holds up Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog::
me: ...XD XD XD

Other goodies include a D20 dog tag, Jelly Babies and Pocky, pens and a case for them, a pin from the Hard Rock Cafe in Cardiff (SHEEP PLAYING GUITAR!), a... Sid-from-Ice Age Pez dispenser(???????), Barnes and Noble money, and plain old money.
And the [livejournal.com profile] yuletide fic of awesome. A v. tiny rec list is forthcoming.
minkhollow: (plot bunny troubles)
Barring someone calling off, I... appear to have a weekend off. I think that's the first time that's happened since I got the job. Did some Christmas shopping after work; more to come Sunday. Haven't decided between Oxford or Borders (or both, but they're in opposite directions, is the thing) yet.
Dad turned on Andrew Bird on his iPod, on the drive home from dinner last night. That... seemed to be exactly what I needed, so I'm following suit on the big computer tonight. I do not, as predicted, miss the dog howling because OMG THERE ARE VIOLINS.
[livejournal.com profile] yuletide uploading is up! I've got my assignment and Yulebunny posted; now it's back to poking at the next Yulebunny. (Which is terrifying because [character] says things like [COMPLETELY RIDICULOUS PHRASE] and I might have to capture that and I'm not sure I can. But it's one of the things I love most about [fandom], so! Cryptic parenthetical is cryptic.)
