*The plan is to get the school paper out more than four times a year. (yay!)
*Drama class is going to be... interesting. There're eleven of us and some questionable mental states.
*I can read The Little Prince for a grade. In AP English, no less. (Last time I "read" it I was eight and mainly just looking at the pictures...)
*Study halls are of the GOOD.
*Three seniors (including myself) in health. At least I'm not in it alone.
*Mrs. Helms liked the CD I put together for her. And I'm sure I can come up with more things.
*"And so it was that the peanut butter sandwich (on whole wheat bread) suddenly ceased to be of any interest, and our herione turned her attention toward the snack cakes also packed for lunch." (That was me, at lunch. Don't know why, just felt rather... Middle-English at the moment.)
The Victorian Lit Theory (meant to post it last night, actually): There is no social commentary to be found. There are only stupid people. Unless it's the sort of thing Daegaer came up with, and then there is only subtext enough to drive you crazy.
Angela, if you're paying attention, bring Good Omens to school tomorrow. Friendly reminder.

Date: 2003-08-26 06:58 pm (UTC)You can read The Little Prince for a grade? That is ridiculously awesome. I read it in French this year for fun, but I'd never read it in English, and I think I want to read the English version in case I missed something... which I'm sure I did!
Also, study halls are of the Fabulous. I'll definitely miss them this year.

If not for study hall I'd've had more homework than a prayer to do when I got home. As such, am praising study hall. ('S also the only time I'm in the same room as The Prat, and the teacher won't take it from him, so. Study hall = of the most excellent.)

Date: 2003-08-26 07:01 pm (UTC)Study halls, subtext, Good Omens, and Middle English moments make me grin.
There is no social commentary to be found. There are only stupid people.
That can be adjusted to fit any situation, ever, I think.

Date: 2003-08-26 07:14 pm (UTC)Man, that subtext rocks beyond all measure. Some of the guys from my English class last year would have a bloody field day with that stuff - they were all over the subtext in Frankenstein. (That was as close to on-topic as we got all year, I think.)
I guess it can fit any situation, but Victorian lit in particular. Only Charles Dickens can make a twelve-page story feel like three hundred.
...Well, and maybe Hemingway. Any rate, they're both Cesspool of Suck.

Date: 2003-08-26 07:27 pm (UTC). . . weird-arse rhinoceros thing? Your class is, um, interesting.
The subtext borders on actual text. 'I'll lick your hand' indeed. Personally, I'm a Roberts/Bracy shipper. Gedge is unworthy peasantry. *sniff*

Date: 2003-08-26 07:41 pm (UTC)The rhinoceros thing is one of the options. It's really really short, but evidently the catch is we have to try and make some kind of sense out of it. Might be good for a larke.
Subtext, we loves it... (If I find those things locally I might recommend them to some of the "nature walks" people (Frankenstein subtext) from last year.)

Date: 2003-08-26 07:57 pm (UTC)I finished The Old Man and the Sea—only school-assigned book I couldn't finish was The Grapes of Wrath—but I'd really like to have my time refunded. 'There is no symbolism, only stupid people (and fish).' Also The Sun Also Rises and a few short stories, which were not exactly well received on my part, though I'm told he wrote much better novels. Bleh.
. . . I've only ever read an except from Frankenstein. I'm mildly disturbed to hear that it's subtexty.

Date: 2003-08-26 08:04 pm (UTC)In places, yes it is. The "nature walks" thing had to do with the people writing that sort of thing. The other almost-but-not-quite-on-topic discussions concerned whether Mary Shelley had any idea what she was writing, on the scientific front.
