I finished The Old Man and the Sea—only school-assigned book I couldn't finish was The Grapes of Wrath—but I'd really like to have my time refunded. 'There is no symbolism, only stupid people (and fish).' Also The Sun Also Rises and a few short stories, which were not exactly well received on my part, though I'm told he wrote much better novels. Bleh.
. . . I've only ever read an except from Frankenstein. I'm mildly disturbed to hear that it's subtexty.
