life is short but sweet for certain

A meme, for something a little more cheerful: Give me any of my characters, and ask me to put them in any of my other fandoms. Throw in a song lyric for spice, and I'll come up with a short fic combining the two!
(I reserve the right to work on this over the weekend.)
Following up on things: I did get a gift fic after all (I AM EXPECTING AWESOMENESS), and the dog did not come home in the Cone of Shame so much as with it. So far we haven't had to make use of it, either.

"I don't either. And we won't be the only people who look like idiots. No big."
It's easy enough to think it's no big deal at the time, but then the dance comes, and Claudia's tripping over her skirt as much as she is Doug's feet, and so is Doug for that matter, and then the light show that constitutes the decorations shorts out the power in the gym.
"You don't think anyone's semester project makes people good dancers, do you?" Doug says.
Claudia laughs, and rests her head on his shoulder. "That's what you're worried about, when nobody can see us anyway?"
"Yeah, well."
All in all, it's a good night.

Date: 2010-12-28 03:09 am (UTC)As though they weren't sticky enough thanks to the part where Charity drank herself into a coma.
Anyway, they need an OB/GYN, and Charlotte comes to the rescue. Thomas doesn't think it'll be much of a rescue, and is privately glad Grace is still at the loft; even with as little emotional involvement as Charity's put into anything but her social life, a nine-year-old doesn't need to see her mother die.
Charlotte finds him in the waiting room four hours after she went in, scrubs still covered in blood. "My part's done," she says. "We can't take the baby out yet, so whether he survives from here depends on your wife's condition, and even then, it'll be a miracle if he makes it out without severe fetal alcohol syndrome." She pauses, then sighs. "I'm sorry. I'm not very good at this at the best of times--"
Thomas smiles. "Don't worry about it. I'd rather have the frank facts."
"While we're at it, then... I don't think your wife's odds of pulling out are very good. I haven't seen many people as completely pickled as she is."
"Might be better for everyone, that way."
Charlotte frowns at him. "You work at Today For You, right?"
"...Yes. Helping with the paperwork, mainly." He's a little surprised that she recognised him, but then, Mark drags everyone in for bit parts, every now and then.
"Then why on earth have you put up with her for so long, if she's this... this?"
Thomas sighs. There are a lot of reasons - keeping Charity's connections from finding a way to get her custody of Grace, a bitch of a prenup that even Joanne and her best divorce-lawyer friends can't untangle - but Mark's been asking him the same question for years, and now all the reasons just feel like shitty excuses.
"I have no idea," he says instead.
The rest of the doctors come out to the waiting room before he can say anything else, and for all Charlotte says she's no good at the grim news, she stays there and squeezes his hand.
The next morning, after he tells everyone the news, Grace says he should send the nice nurse some flowers. Thomas can't help but agree.
