minkhollow: Help!: The Exciting Adventure of Paul on the Floor (paul on the floor)
...so I went to open the file for the story I've been working on this month? The one I think I broke 10,000 words on? The one I haven't really posted around much because I have no idea whether that would count as 'previous publication' and I think this is worth that investment?
TextEdit's claiming the file got corrupted, between 11 last night and now. And trying to upload it to - oh, anywhere - to see if it can be salvaged crashes Firefox.
I have a few bits, but not much. Because I've been an idiot about backing this one up and I knew I should've emailed it last night and and and.
Dammit, Hex, this is not what I needed. (There may be a last-ditch rescue attempt in the next few days. But... still. NOT FUN.

*Since I naturally forgot to mention on Sunday: Holy crap, this thing is six years old now. WHEN DID THAT HAPPEN.
*Did the visitation-and-funeral-Mass thing last night and today; a former teacher of mine died over the weekend. It wasn't a terrible shock, but it still sucks. (And I'm still Not Pleased with the last two times I did this particular bit, since they were bigger shocks to the system.) On the bright side, I talked to some people I haven't seen in years.
*Note to mother: I cannot magically 'find a job' in one day, though I can certainly look for one. (And I did that, I've been doing that, I hope I can get one in this bloody stupid economy.)
*On a lighter note: Writer types who haven't already seen? [livejournal.com profile] hogswatchfic! It's like Yuletide, but with a later deadline and no fandom limits and less stress and... not terribly like Yuletide at all, really, except for the 'fic for the holidays' part.
minkhollow: view from below a copper birch at Mount Holyoke (his name pirate guy!)
With apologies to Frank Zappa: So since LJ's servers are in Montana, does that mean we should be on the lookout for Frank the Goat's dental floss empire?
Mom came down with the plague last weekend; I've been fighting it since Wednesday. It's mostly gone now, but... still. Not Fun. (And Dad, I know you're feeling it too, but you're the least sick of the three of us. So don't whine at me for not having the resources to go get you milk.)
On a lighter note, ICONS:
it was one of those things that had to be done. )
Meme forthcoming, possibly.
minkhollow: (tony stark built it in a cave!)
So those Genius Bar people are pretty smart. Hex has been given cheese, so one hopes all is back to normal. (Certainly the fact that it's actually running is a cheering sign.)
Mom and I might go vote in the next couple of days, since Ohio's early-voting thing seems to be 'I live here and I want to vote now rather than later.'
I have writing things to type up, and perhaps more to write. I... like having ideas. It's a good thing. (Speaking of, [livejournal.com profile] mapsarecheating's profile has more links on it now.)
minkhollow: view from below a copper birch at Mount Holyoke (bold and stupid icon)
The Swordsmen remember me. That? Is kind of the coolest thing in the world. Also, I have a D20 necklace now; the die detaches so you can still use it.
Hex is... still not shut down. Hoping tomorrow brings some answers with it.
Also, it's v. good to be writing again.
minkhollow: (anthill inside)
Tried Hex again last night. There was no beeping this time, but... well, I finally got a shutdown request through about 9:30 last night, and GUESS WHAT HASN'T HAPPENED YET. So I have a Genius Bar appointment for Monday afternoon; hopefully, that'll give me some idea of what to do next.
minkhollow: Sputnik: In Soviet Russia, space races YOU! (space races you!)
Thanks to those who sent well-wishes (and paid time, wtf, Ali? XD); yesterday was all right, as was today.
Hex is still resting quietly, and to top everything else off, took a dive off the coffee table last night. ::facepalms:: Dad said it didn't land on the monitor, which is good, but... yeah. Planning to try booting up again tonight or tomorrow and seeing how things go from there.
Also: Yesterday my books came! There's nothing quite like seeing your name in print to get the creative juices flowing again; I have some epic-fantasy spoof that got posted to various places yesterday, and the 'verse I was writing in for that anthology is getting noisy again.
([livejournal.com profile] allfireburns: I read your story earlier. Holy CRAP that was good.)
minkhollow: view from below a copper birch at Mount Holyoke (spaceman spiff)
Okay so, uh, beeping noises after you boot up are bad, right?
As is taking nearly an hour to get through two and a half pages on Safari?
This... may be problematic. Suggestions welcome, if anyone knows something other than 'pray your data's still fine.'
minkhollow: (tony stark built it in a cave!)
Hex update: Finally shut down, as of quarter after two or perhaps a bit sooner.
I started the shutdown command at 11:30.
Hopefully, leaving it be for a while will solve the worst of whatever this is. (I've kept an ear on the hard drive throughout; it sounded like it was working hard, but not doing the broken-record thing. So if it's hardware, at least it's... different hardware?)
MEANWHILE IRON MAN IS HERE.
minkhollow: (anthill inside)
So I ran software updates for Hex last night... and Hex proceeded to pitch a massive fit. (Example: I think it's finally shut down, an hour after I started the request to shut down.) Consensus so far is that it's just the software playing catch-up; not sure how long letting it sit is going to last.
(Am on parents' computer at present. Hopefully this will enforce that the left shift key on this stupid keyboard doesn't work.)
In brighter news, Iron Man might actually get here today if the tracking's right in saying it's in town, and I wrote stuff last night. I might post it later, if I have a complete scene. Suffice to say Valspar the fabulous adventurer is Quite Fun to write about. XD
minkhollow: (song of the viking)
Our cable came back Wednesday, just in time for Countdown!
Got all kinds of in-house stuff done yesterday, and somewhat less today on account of Leaving The House (gasp!); still, productivity of a sort is afoot.
Job search is also afoot, in that I've applied to some more things where I want to go and asked about subbing around here. Now the question is, would the payoff be worth all the hoops I'd need to jump through to get that?
We might be going to the Renaissance Festival Sunday. This would be of the Good; hopefully I'll be able to see the Swordsmen this year.
In conclusion: arr matey etc.
minkhollow: (leap of faith)
Power buggered off again five hours after my last post; it returned yesterday afternoon, and seems to be sticking around. Dad and I were cleaning up the yard some today. The one huge branch that fell... apparently had termites and carpenter ants anyway!
(The two smaller trees that took major damage are kind of a bummer, though.)
Cable has been gone since the first power flicker on Sunday.
Upgraded to Firefox 3 (I know, I know, finally), which is shiny; however, it's one step ahead of PMOG, which is making me sadface.
In any case, I'm back around, which means the job search can plod slowly but surely onward. (Trina was right; after the first resume, they get easier to send out.)
I also need to figure out where the hell my writing ability got to.
minkhollow: Sputnik: In Soviet Russia, space races YOU! (space races you!)
So last night's return of power was a false alarm. And this morning, there was no water either. The water sort of trickled back, and when Mom and I got back from getting bottled water (just in case) and lunch, the power was back!
Hopefully it'll stick around this time.
Nothing fell on the house or cars, there's maybe one roof shingle out of place (and there are another four layers up there anyway, thanks to OCD Lady who lived here before us) - we made out pretty good, comparatively. (Saw a lot of BIG trees uprooted, while we were out. Not many actually on houses, but still. Oh, and a power pole that got broken by the wind.)
This is reaffirming my desire to not live in hurricane territory, let's just say. And it's a pretty strong argument for underground power lines.
minkhollow: view from below a copper birch at Mount Holyoke (what's with these lights?)
So, that was ten hours without power, courtesy of Ike remnants. NOT MY IDEA OF A GOOD TIME, ACTUALLY.
Still, it's back now (pretty much at the stroke of midnight), and I found a cool-sounding job before the power gave out that I think I have a good shot at. Hopefully, that's going to turn out well, and then I can get to where I'm going.
minkhollow: view from below a copper birch at Mount Holyoke (i'm surprised)
Just because my social life doesn't take me out of the house very often does not make it nonexistent. You'd think it was my fault my friends are scattered around the world, or something.
On the bright side, I found a job posting that looks promising near where I want to be.
minkhollow: (terrified houseplants)
Paper!journal is no longer two weeks and a bit behind. (It's still one week and a bit behind, but I'm working on that.) Note to self: Next time, don't leave it in your backpack after vacation.
The job-search thing is still mildly terrifying. This does not mean Mom prodding me to do it is encouraging me to move faster, for all I know I should, but at least I've got feelers out there.
And now, some entertaining images:
further Adventures in Spam )
...a macro. blame Quin; I do. )
minkhollow: (phoebe's song)
So yesterday was... a bit of an adventure, but it ended well.
As for today... well. In conclusion, I may be naming my next computer JARVIS.
minkhollow: (burn down that bridge)
and now, a concert review. )
We missed [livejournal.com profile] metaphor and [livejournal.com profile] madbonnycaptain through flukes of timing. Oh well; perhaps next time.
Re: latest LJ fuss - minus several million for initial execution, but ten out of ten for owning up to their mistake in a timely manner.
Re: classes - you know what sucks? Two midterms the same afternoon. Sucks more? The first, which is timed because it's art slides, starting late, resulting in no time for last-minute prep before the second.
But they're both over now, and I think I did all right on them. So now (well, tomorrow), I disappear to Philly for a week. There will be less Internets than usual. Suspect I will survive by writing a lot.
minkhollow: (not to be taken away)
I'm having one of those moments where I feel like I haven't been productive, academically speaking, even though I've probably written enough to finish off my assignment for the noveling class for Monday. (That will probably end up on [livejournal.com profile] mapsarecheating, once I have it all typed.) It's the fact that I'm not writing a paper or reading from textbooks, I think.
Speaking of writing journals... I feel like [livejournal.com profile] sto_helit_lace has long since outgrown its name. Especially now that I'm only writing Disc stuff occasionally. But I don't want to get a rename token without a good alternative in mind, so - suggestions?
listy time )
Also speaking of journals I write in, I think the paper!journal thing is serving me well.
