minkhollow: (actual reality)
So that's that, then.
So long and thanks for all the fish, Jack who should have been Fidget and was often Stupid. (And that 'should have been Fidget' part is part of why it's sucked so much; this was not a dog designed for inaction, and he was barely moving.)
Be a dog, dog.
minkhollow: (do not go gentle)
Poor dog's had a busy day; people have been visiting, sort of a last vigil thinger. And he's feeling it.
And there's a lump on his hip that I'm pretty sure wasn't there a few days ago.

Tuesday's going to suck.
minkhollow: view from below a copper birch at Mount Holyoke (don't mess with the claudiometer)
Today is less awesome. (We're not talking about this morning. ::EPIC FACEPALM::)
I have a sinking feeling we're going to put the dog down next week; my money's on Tuesday, that being Dad's day off. He's in denial about it, as he usually is when it comes to dogs, but going to Egypt won't help anyone.
And much as I say I won't miss certain aspects of the dog... we've had him since I was eleven. So it still sucks. And the job hunt sucks, and I think I'm PMSing, and... really, there's not much I can do about a lot of things.
Trying to figure out what my [livejournal.com profile] getyourwordsout pledge for next year will be, since I'd like to do it again. I might do a single-project one, since I really do need to get cracking on Vincenia and environs.
And now, work.
minkhollow: Steven Banks: Elvis gotta write a speech now (elvis... gotta write a speech now)
*[livejournal.com profile] hogswatchfic is open for business; sign-ups run until the 13th, and fics are due the 31st. If you missed Yuletide/are avoiding it/just want to write Generic Winter Holidays fic for someone, give it a go!
*Snow on the ground and my profile! Thanks, [livejournal.com profile] gehayi!
*I'm passing up a concert on Thursday, partly because I first heard about it Saturday. I'd love to see BNL again, but they're sharing the bill with three other bands, so it's not really a sound investment.
*Heat's been down at work, which is where the subject line comes in. Yesterday there were space heaters, which made it better; I'm hoping it'll be functional again when I go back Wednesday.
*And now... the dog.
in which the news is not surprising, but still sucks )
*Yuletide assignment might be finished. I need to type it up and assemble a beta squad before I know for sure. Oh, [fandom], how I've missed you.
*But first, I need to assemble something to go with [livejournal.com profile] quinby's birthday card.
minkhollow: view from below a copper birch at Mount Holyoke (then i'll market an elixir)
[Error: unknown template qotd]

I have several memorable concerts, as my parents have been taking me to them since I was five. But the winner has to be a Barenaked Ladies concert in 1996.
Thirteen years ago Friday, to be exact, on my tenth birthday. I heard they were going to be in Oxford less than a week beforehand - when we went to see them in Cincinnati, so I was sure there was no way we'd go to the Oxford show.
But then [livejournal.com profile] jenerator got tickets (THIRD ROW, NO LESS) and we went to dinner in Oxford, under the pretext of her wanting to see me for the day, and Dad got my then-brand-new concert shirt out of the car and went 'here, you might need this.' I was convinced they'd gotten me a second one until they got out the tickets. XD
This was right after they started telling people not to throw Kraft Dinner at the stage (apparently high-velocity macaroni and cheese hurts, and at the concert just before this, I got covered in cheese sauce powder); I still have some of the funny money they passed around at the concert. Good for admission into the treefort, yo.
So: Not only my most memorable concert, but the best birthday present ever.
minkhollow: (it's all about the information)
And now, a week in the life:
*I think we've survived the worst of the back-to-school rush.
*We found out on Saturday that there was a family reunion on Sunday (by virtue of New Mexico aunt actually being in town). Turns out our invitation was sent to two addresses ago; we last lived there when I was three. XD That was reasonably fun.
*Dog had a tumor on his ribcage removed this morning. Second time it's been there, and apparently twice as nasty as the first one. Dad was saying maybe he should've had it done before they went on vacation, but I'm immensely glad they didn't, considering how much I was at work the first week they were gone.
*Writing... does not continue as apace as I would necessarily like; I'll be taking prompts to that end soon, I'm sure. (I think I don't know enough about the world to invent the wedding whole-cloth that I need to, and I'm stuck re: moving on before I get that sorted out.) But I did post my [livejournal.com profile] genderbendbb fic the other day! (And the art is fabulous.)
minkhollow: Dr. Horrible, caught off guard (spooked)
*The adventuring party has returned from the UK, replete with Jelly Babies. Somehow I was not expecting... actual baby-shaped candy, and the texture took a bit of getting used to, but on the whole I approve. (Also, dear US: Why do we not have blackcurrant-flavored stuff? Srsly.)
*Was fighting the headache from hell yesterday. I think it was a combination of weather system changes and possibly a bit of dehydration - which is weird, as I had more water than usual yesterday. ::eloquent shrug:: It's more or less gone now, so.
*Relevant to the subject line: If I leave that in my car long enough, I'll actually know all the words. XD (This should not surprise me, along similar logic to why Brand New Day posed no problems once I knew the words.)
minkhollow: view from below a copper birch at Mount Holyoke (short attention span theatre)
Some enterprising soul in one of Mom's classes whipped up Half Life: The Board Game. Not sure how exactly that works, from what I know of the game, but I was highly amused nonetheless.
Also, I've got another couple Dreamwidth invite codes. Anyone interested? ([livejournal.com profile] sotto_voice, I'll send you one of the now-three in a bit.)
minkhollow: Robert Redford pointing, from Sneakers (sometimes i don't understand myself)
(Well, actually, they don't, and I do care. But that's another story.)
Mom Rickrolled people at school on Friday. Sometimes my family is awesome.
Got myself a copy of Mental Floss over the weekend, when I picked up birthday/Mother's Day presents for Mom. I miss that magazine; now that I have a little disposable income, I might renew my subscription. Still thinking that over.
I'm thinking of importing my fic LJ into a closed-membership community here; that might be the easiest way to do it. If I do, I'll probably call it wornoutmetaphor.
I've abandoned Dr. Horrible as my in-car music in favor of Disc One. I needed to get back to my roots; so far, I heartily approve of this decision. (Making Dr. Horrible work as in-car music involves putting things on repeat several times. XD)
An update on the epic genderswap fic:

Thus making it the longest single-fandom piece I've ever done. And the longest fanfic, as it just barely clears the Harry Potter/Sneakers crossover. Now, I wait for the betas.
minkhollow: (look at my wrist!)
So I've had Dr. Horrible in my car pretty much nonstop since February - except today after work, I decided I needed to get back to my roots, and swapped it out for BNL. This is a Good Decision, I feel.
My [livejournal.com profile] genderbendbb is over 13,000 words, and I have at least three more scenes in mind, one of which is likely to break a thousand words by itself. The minimum word count's not going to be an issue, methinks. XD
And finally: Mom Rickrolled people on their way out of school on Friday. Sometimes my family is pretty awesome. (A coworker who goes there said he thinks it might be the greatest Rickroll in history; I think it's second to the Macy's Parade one Cartoon Network did, but that's still not bad.)
minkhollow: (burn down that bridge)
*So, Dreamwidth; if you know where I am here, you know where I am there.
*Four days and a bit into [livejournal.com profile] genderbendbb work, and I've got over 6000 words. This is SO MUCH FUN. (Incidentally, they're still looking for artists over there.)
*Today was... epic. My supervisor is either very astute or has the best timing ever, though, so work wasn't as stressful as it might have been. Life, the Universe, and Everything, however... I never could get the hang of Tuesdays.
*Alphabet meme and this thing are still open, though I may not get to them until after I have a rough draft of the big story down.
minkhollow: (what a crazy random happenstance!)
(Subject line has little to do with anything, other than this.)
*Alphabet meme: only 10 letters left!
*Work is work-like, so far. I look forward to having money again.
*Parents and I made an excursion to Canton, to see pretty kimono on display. (Very pretty.) I think there's some kind of time tunnel on 71 between Columbus and Cleveland; that seems to take forever.

Mom said she considered Ariel, but given Disney's The Little Mermaid adaptation, I... think I'm glad she didn't go that route. I got enough crap in grade school regarding certain three-hour tours, so that really wouldn't have helped.
And she's said that if I'd been a boy, I likely would have been Aaron Fletcher. But I wasn't, despite her certainty before I was actually born. XD

Alphabet meme still has openings.
Job stuff tomorrow! I need a tag for that.
minkhollow: (all designed to blow our minds)
*Crystal, Dad wants to talk to you; give him a call, if you have time?
*Alphabet meme is still open!
*Two interviews in one sitting, Tuesday. I'm waiting for them to go through the rest of the interview pool, but I was the best of the best so far (and... also the first) as of the other day. XD Here's hoping.
*I know what I want in a Dr. Horrible ringtone, now: the first chorus of So They Say. Bouncy, ear-catching, and with a lovely twist at the end if it's allowed to finish. XD
*Icon meme, via [livejournal.com profile] misslucyjane:

Oh yeah, that's the other thing.
My mother has officially beaten me to Facebook.
So given that, just how much longer can I hold out? XD
minkhollow: view from below a copper birch at Mount Holyoke (sunday in the sunset leaves)
Or, today's adventures in Wacky Yardwork Hijinks.
More accurately, 'Meltman! With the power to...... MELT!' )
Somebody nailed the telephone pole on the corner last night - not bad enough to cut power, but the road's blocked on either side of the house. It's... kinda weird not having any traffic going by.
minkhollow: view from below a copper birch at Mount Holyoke (his name pirate guy!)
FINALLY, AN INTERVIEW. ON MONDAY.
Hopefully there will be MONEY in my future. And less parental nagging! (I mean, really, apparently leaving out every sordid detail means I don't want to work; guys? This is frustrating me too.)
minkhollow: Sputnik: In Soviet Russia, space races YOU! (space races you!)
I think it says something that I've practically memorised the work-history portion of my resume. What it says exactly, other than 'WILL SOMEONE GIVE ME A DAMN JOB ALREADY?!', I'm not exactly sure.
Mom found some photos from the time [livejournal.com profile] sunbruiseddream and I went to the antique car parade (Crystal: Trent's in a couple of these. Do you want them/think any other of his more immediate family might?). Including one of the car with the 'Al Smith for President' and 'Repeal 18th Amendment' things on the back. It's given me a plot bunny; this may require a trip to the library sometime soon.
answer-with-icons meme, stolen from misslucyjane )
Broke 70,000 words on the year last night. At least the writer's block seems to have abated.
minkhollow: view from below a copper birch at Mount Holyoke (i'm surprised)
It must be Thursday. I never could get the hang of Thursdays.
In other news, this is kind of a neat thing.
minkhollow: view from below a copper birch at Mount Holyoke (short attention span theatre)
I feel like doing fic commentaries. Tell me on what! Anything on [livejournal.com profile] sto_helit_lace is fair game; one part at a time of the multi-part things would be easiest on everyone's sanity.
Random frustrating thing: Okay, so when I screw up, let me apologise. Don't act like I can magically never have screwed up in the first place. OKAY? OKAY.
Attempting to maintain optimism re: job search, but it is not so easy. (nooooo paid account don't leave me!) Still, I'm trying, and I have a couple more feelers out.
Random squee thing: the writing is going well, though I've had a slight slowdown since knocking off my first [livejournal.com profile] lgbtfest fic. That's all right, though; I'll recover.
