ALSO. So I've finally seen this Dr. Horrible thing.
1) Even knowing it was a classic Whedon ending, WHAT THE HELL.
2) Otherwise, adorable!
3) More accessible insane theory of the day: So Cosmo totally does finances for the Evil League of Evil, yes? YES. (Organised crime, and all that.)
4) Less accessible insane theory: Dr. Horrible and Sam from Villains By Necessity; separated at birth, Y/N? (Y. Y Y Y.)

So there was this whole thing on Monday where I got to the airport only to find that, while the weather in both Columbus and Denver was peachy, Chicago was so nasty it screwed up everything. (I choose to blame this in part on a certain retrograding planet.) That was not so fun; I got to Denver yesterday afternoon. So far, so good.
(Other than the part where Hex and the wireless network aren't really on speaking terms. That's not so fun. But, you know, there are other computers to be borrowed.)
Also, I got a nod for funniest sentence of the week at [livejournal.com profile] getyourwordsout, and I wrote some more of my steampunk thing during the layover yesterday. Fun times!
If anyone reading this thing cares to attempt a meetup-thing, comment and let me know; there's only one car to be had, so it'll take some finagling (and Friday might be the best chance, given that), but we shall see.

My aunt did tarot readings for everyone at the family shindig-thing Thursday. Mine as basically 'something good's coming your way; marshal your forces and be on the lookout for it.' I'm taking 'marshal your forces' to mean 'stick out this [livejournal.com profile] getyourwordsout thing,' which so far is going swimmingly. (I suppose it helps that I have a story I'm particularly stoked about writing.)
The job hunt is picking up again, with the holidays being over; hoping something actually comes of it, this time.

So, [livejournal.com profile] yuletide reveals.
I wrote Second Wind, my initial assignment for [livejournal.com profile] kyburg, and A Matter of Presentation, a stocking-stuffer for Ponderosa. Both are Sneakers, and the promised commentary for at least one may yet follow.
Thank you to [livejournal.com profile] marginaliana for Undercover Work, and to [livejournal.com profile] florahart for Blackguard (PS; Glad to have introduced you to the book. You did a LOVELY job).
minkhollow: (happy hogswatch!)
You know what's awesome? SIR TERRY PRATCHETT, IS WHAT.
Otherwise: There were some good bits to this year, but on the whole I'm glad to see it go. Hopefully 2009 will bring some gainful employment. (At the very least, it will bring writing. Lots of writing. ::eyes [livejournal.com profile] getyourwordsout::)
If anyone cares to guess what I wrote for Yuletide, feel free (my beta-reader is, of course, Not Allowed). I'm tempted to write up commentaries for the both of them, after the fact.
minkhollow: (anthill inside)
Now that I've had a chance to read more than what was written for me, and get more coherent comments on those than were seen previously: A handful of Yuletide recs.
Other Christmas haul includes a couple journals, a handful of pens, Pocky, some books about writing (one of which is Writers' Market 2009!), some thermal PJs, a D20 necklace (with other dice that can go in), and some good bumper stickers. And a detailed map of Cincinnati that actually covers as far north as Dayton and down into Kentucky. That'll come in useful, when I get around to writing things set around here.
(Of course, the loudest idea at the moment takes place in another world entirely, and has got so complicated that I need a spreadsheet to keep the timeline and places straight. But that's all right! XD)
minkhollow: (happy hogswatch!)
OH MY GOD
SO LIKE BEFORE SLEEP I NEED TO CAPSLOCK ABOUT YULETIDE
BECAUSE LOOK LOOK I GOT VILLAINS BY NECESSITY FIC AND IT IS AWESOME
(I ALSO GOT EQUALLY AWESOME SNEAKERS FIC)
BUT MOSTLY EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE I AM SO GLAD I SIGNED UP THIS YEAR
(WHO NEEDS PUNCTUATION AT THIS HOUR)
minkhollow: view from below a copper birch at Mount Holyoke (incendiary wit part 2)
*Okay, so I kind of want to see Milk mostly because of the commercials using "Queen Bitch." (And I'm wondering if they're using it in part because Hunky Dory's got a bit more attention lately, thanks to Life On Mars? But maybe it's just because it fits the subject of the click. Either way, it was v. disconcerting in the best of ways, first time I heard it coming from the TV. XD)
*Meijer makes up for its lack of Pocky by having TEABERRY GUM. BEST EVER.
*Fun times: Going up to Oxford for Christmas shopping. I at least have something to give the parents now.
*Also fun times: Developing mythologies for original fantasy stuff.
minkhollow: Sputnik: In Soviet Russia, space races YOU! (space races you!)
WHY ARE THERE MOSQUITOS IN MY BATHROOM
WHAT IS THIS NONSENSE.
(This capslock brought to you by the Viking hordes.)
On the bright side, I have a draft of my [livejournal.com profile] yuletide assignment done.
minkhollow: view from below a copper birch at Mount Holyoke (yes we can)
*Change.gov, yo! Filled out my application this afternoon. EEP. But at the same time, that would be full of Win.
*Otherwise, the Great Job Hunt is... job-hunt-like. Nothing exciting to report.
*Yuletide assignment is rolling right along. This is fun! Which is good, since I was wondering if my creativity had wandered off again.
minkhollow: view from below a copper birch at Mount Holyoke (yes we can)
...So I have a thing for icons of people pointing. I don't know why.
But if MSNBC's projections are any indication, it's a good time to unveil this one. Picture's from [livejournal.com profile] adinfinitum's picspam.
I like this hope thing.

...And can I just say how nice it is to have an election wrapped up all in one night?
minkhollow: (i do not type with my hands)
And now, writing things:
*[livejournal.com profile] wrisomifu! Because I don't have a coherent enough plot idea for Nano, this year, but I need to be writing something. It will also help me burn through [livejournal.com profile] itsproductivity prompts from last month and July.
*[livejournal.com profile] yuletide signups should be going live tonight! I like this plan; there are a few fandoms I know well in the mix, so it should be fun.
*I get to help beta-test the OTW archive! (NB: link is only liable to look pretty if you have Firefox.) So far, it's v. shiny.
minkhollow: view from below a copper birch at Mount Holyoke (incendiary wit part 2)
A meme: Pick a pairing from my fandoms, and come with a location and/or situation, and I will write you between 50 and 250 words about the kiss that happened in that context.
A thing I forgot to mention Friday: Mom and I voted Thursday, for great yay.
A thing of... not-win: Dog ended up with maggots in his fur Sunday, EW EW EW. On the bright side, he's doing better with the explosions, and that nasty little twist is cleaned off.
A thing of win: I get a [livejournal.com profile] quinby this weekend.
minkhollow: view from below a copper birch at Mount Holyoke (normally so discreet)
*So I had a phone interview Wednesday, with one of the places I applied to in DC. Consensus: mentioning that there is an in-person-interview component was probably a good sign. (To that end, any DC-area people who wouldn't mind someone crashing for a couple nights?)
*Job hunt continues, both here and abroad.
*Yesterday was bookended by the dog exploding in my bathroom. At... least it's easier to clean than a carpet or the hardwood? But STILL.
*[livejournal.com profile] allfireburns, the book is in the mail as of this afternoon; should get there sometime next week.
*I have been writing stuff! This is of the Good.
*...Economy news still makes me feel like Cosmo is taking over the world after all. This is not such a comforting thought, much as he's one of my favorite bad guys ever.
minkhollow: (tony stark built it in a cave!)
So those Genius Bar people are pretty smart. Hex has been given cheese, so one hopes all is back to normal. (Certainly the fact that it's actually running is a cheering sign.)
Mom and I might go vote in the next couple of days, since Ohio's early-voting thing seems to be 'I live here and I want to vote now rather than later.'
I have writing things to type up, and perhaps more to write. I... like having ideas. It's a good thing. (Speaking of, [livejournal.com profile] mapsarecheating's profile has more links on it now.)
minkhollow: view from below a copper birch at Mount Holyoke (bold and stupid icon)
The Swordsmen remember me. That? Is kind of the coolest thing in the world. Also, I have a D20 necklace now; the die detaches so you can still use it.
Hex is... still not shut down. Hoping tomorrow brings some answers with it.
Also, it's v. good to be writing again.
minkhollow: Sputnik: In Soviet Russia, space races YOU! (space races you!)
Thanks to those who sent well-wishes (and paid time, wtf, Ali? XD); yesterday was all right, as was today.
Hex is still resting quietly, and to top everything else off, took a dive off the coffee table last night. ::facepalms:: Dad said it didn't land on the monitor, which is good, but... yeah. Planning to try booting up again tonight or tomorrow and seeing how things go from there.
Also: Yesterday my books came! There's nothing quite like seeing your name in print to get the creative juices flowing again; I have some epic-fantasy spoof that got posted to various places yesterday, and the 'verse I was writing in for that anthology is getting noisy again.
([livejournal.com profile] allfireburns: I read your story earlier. Holy CRAP that was good.)
minkhollow: (tony stark built it in a cave!)
Hex update: Finally shut down, as of quarter after two or perhaps a bit sooner.
I started the shutdown command at 11:30.
Hopefully, leaving it be for a while will solve the worst of whatever this is. (I've kept an ear on the hard drive throughout; it sounded like it was working hard, but not doing the broken-record thing. So if it's hardware, at least it's... different hardware?)
MEANWHILE IRON MAN IS HERE.
