minkhollow: W13: Claudia playing guitar (doesn't remind us of musetta's waltz)
[personal profile] minkhollow
In an effort to use this more, I'm putting my Yuletide recs here rather than [livejournal.com profile] foodless_diet this year. This is the first chunk; other than my gift fics I haven't really hit the back half of the alphabet yet. But onward!

Won't Bring Me Home (1040 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Villains by Necessity - Eve Forward
Rating: General Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Original Female Character
Summary:

After the Whitewashing is ended, Arcie's people begin to return.

I am just about never not the person playing in this incredibly rich sandbox, which is just one of the lovely things about this story. After just a thousand words, I feel like I know these once and future members of the Thieves' Guild, and I'm so glad they're rebuilding what's theirs.

Moves Like Charlie's Angels (3389 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Warehouse 13
Rating: General Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Claudia Donovan & Steve Jinks
Characters: Steve Jinks, Claudia Donovan
Summary:

Claudia accompanies Steve on an early morning trip to the shooting range.

By the nature of the show, we don't get to see what the characters do when they're not saving the world very often. This slice of normalcy is just as awesome as a case, in its own way - and I learned a thing or two about handling a gun!

The Lives We'll Live (1017 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Warehouse 13
Rating: General Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Jack Secord/Rebecca St. Clair
Characters: Rebecca St. Clair, Jack Secord
Summary:

Rebecca and Jack, together forever? Jack comes to Rebecca.

Not only is this completely adorable and an entirely plausible way Rebecca and Jack might have both made it out alive, per the notes at the beginning, my AU monster inspired the author to do this for me. It's always nice to know the epics pay off. (This story is otherwise not connected to said AU monster, so don't feel you'd need to have read that first.)

Dear Aristotle (2378 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Classical Greece and Rome History & Literature RPF, Bill & Ted (1989 1991)
Rating: General Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Alexander the Great/Hephaistion
Characters: William "Bill" S. Preston Esq., Theodore "Ted" Logan, Hephaistion
Summary:

In a letter to Aristotle, Hephaiston documents a brief detour to Meiza, the site of his formative education. Unfortunately, what was supposed to be a peaceful few days reminiscing about old times is interrupted by two strange men the likes of which Hephaiston has never seen.

I came for Bill and Ted and stayed for the lovely episotlary fiction, not to mention the look at the temporal locals trying to wrap their heads around Bill and Ted's utter '80sness.

Spaceman Spiff and the Alien Conspiracy (1844 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Calvin & Hobbes
Rating: General Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Calvin (Calvin and Hobbes), Hobbes (Calvin and Hobbes), Mrs Wormwood (Calvin and Hobbes), Rosalyn (Calvin and Hobbes)
Summary:

"Don't worry, I'm sure he'll be fine."

She dropped her hand to to stare incredulously at the tiger. "Let me repeat," she said, very slowly. "Calvin has a weapon whose power is only limited by his imagination."

"I said he'd be fine, nothing about the rest of us."

One of the hits of this Yuletide, and with good reason. It explains so much about Calvin's world, and I can totally see it happening. (Not to mention, Rosalyn talking to Hobbes! I think I love it when other people talk to Hobbes, just on principle.)

A Change in the Wind (2481 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Mary Poppins (1964), Doctor Who (2005)
Rating: General Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Mary Poppins, Eleventh Doctor
Summary:

Why does Mary Poppins have a bag that's bigger on the inside? Why, because she's a Time Lady, of course!

I've known for a long time, in that way where I think in crossovers, that Mary Poppins is a Time Lady, and I have a deep, abiding yearning for the Doctor to find out he's not the only one after all - so this fic just hits all the spots. Every last one of them.

Having The Constitution For It (2599 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Enchanted Forest Chronicles - Patricia Wrede
Rating: General Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Morwen/Telemain, Cimorene/Mendanbar
Characters: Morwen (Enchanted Forest), Telemain (Enchanted Forest), Cimorene (Enchanted Forest), Mendanbar (Enchanted Forest), Willin (Enchanted Forest), Daystar (Enchanted Forest)
Summary:

"It's acting as if it's made its choice for a new king," Telemain said. Indignation coloured his voice, as if he were personally affronted that the sword had dared do something unexpected. "But it can't be - Mendanbar is clearly, well, still alive."

In which Daystar accidentally turns the Enchanted Forest into a republic, and the outcome of the first election for prime minister is utterly logical, when you think about it. I can totally see this happening in-universe.

Out of the Shadows (1097 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986)
Rating: General Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Jeanie Bueller
Summary:

Some part of Jeanie actually expected that things would go back to normal when she returned to school.

I am all in favor of Jeanie getting her chance to shine on her own, rather than as part of the Bueller Family Unit; this fic handles it brilliantly.

The Blog of Levi Who Is Called Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal (6379 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Lamb - Christopher Moore
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Biff/Maggie (Lamb)
Characters: Biff (Lamb), Maggie (Lamb)
Summary:

How do you distribute a gospel in the modern world? After their resurrection, Biff and Maggie decide to try and find out.

I can totally see this as a coda to the book.

The Swan Princess (1098 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Once Upon a Time (2011)
Rating: General Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Sheriff Graham/Emma Swan
Characters: Emma Swan
Summary:

Emma Swan never liked fairy tales.

This is an utterly brilliant Emma voice.

The Inch-High Samurai (2386 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Once Upon a Time (2011)
Rating: General Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Summary:

Aiko finds herself drawn to Junichi in Storybrooke, but what was their story in the past of Enchanted Forest? Will history repeat itself?

I don't know the original story that inspired this, but the author provides all the context you need, and the Storybrooke parts are very true to the feel of the show. (But I can't help wanting Aiko to overcome the peer pressure.)
An added bonus to me is that someone actually says no to Rumpelstiltskin, because seriously, why does everyone make deals with that guy?

Not Far From The Tree (6911 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Once Upon a Time (2011)
Rating: General Audiences
Warning: Author Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Characters: Emma Swan, Henry Mills, Regina Mills, Mr Gold
Summary:

When Emma Swan arrives in Storybrooke, things start changing for everyone.

I am going to be so, so disappointed if Emma never goes to Storybrooke's sushi restaurant, now.

Straw for Gold (8334 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Once Upon a Time (2011)
Rating: General Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Emma Swan, Henry Mills, Snow White | Mary Margaret Blanchard, Regina Mills, Original Female Character, Rumpelstiltskin | Mr. Gold
Summary:

The Miller's Daughter got an unhappy ending the first time around and Emma's not going to let that happen again.

A pitch-perfect casefic-meets-fairy-tale, and a rare case where things work out better in Storybrooke than they did the first time out.

Motherless Children (2106 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Once Upon a Time (2011)
Rating: General Audiences
Warning: Author Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Characters: Snow White | Mary Margaret Blanchard, Emma Swan, Cinderella | Ashley Boyd, Ruby
Summary:

In the town of Storeybrooke, Emma is not alone in being lost from her roots, her heritage.

I absolutely loved this look at the women of Storybrooke and their various family issues (and at the end, I just wanted to give poor Mary Margaret a hug).

Lunch at the Diner (4389 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Once Upon a Time (2011)
Rating: General Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Emma Swan, Snow White | Mary Margaret Blanchard, Ruby | Red Riding Hood, Dr. Whale
Summary:

After the disaster with Graham, Emma's ready to skip town, but a little logic makes her think.

Even though Dr. Whale hasn't been shown in a great light on the show so far, I love this explanation for his Enchanted Forest identity and will now be very disappointed if the show wants to make him someone else.

Snowbound (7006 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Once Upon a Time (2011)
Rating: Not Rated
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Prince Charming/Snow White
Characters: Henry Mills, Emma Swan, Prince "Charming" James | David Nolan, Snow White | Mary Margaret Blanchard
Summary:

Storybrooke is hit by a blizzard and Henry is stuck at school. While he waits for Regina to pick him up, his family keeps him company.

Love, love, love! Henry's differentiation between his mother and his family, David and Mary Margaret almost remembering things, the epic snowball fight, the hints at another person's identity lurking in the background - it's pure Win.

In other news: Three out of three very satisfied recips. \o/
