So there's a thing going around (probably on its way to becoming a meme) that's talking about characters you RP(ed). And it looks fun, so I'm gonna give it a whirl.
the faithful sidekicks: Jane Lane (Daria), Morwen (Enchanted Forest Chronicles), Moist (Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog), Jarvis (Iron Man)
I like the characters who have stories in their own right, but are willing to play a supporting role to those who matter most to them. Morwen doesn't quite fall into this as she has a whole book from her POV, and Moist bristles at being called a sidekick (because he's a henchman, thankyouverymuch), but all four of these have been incredibly fun to flesh out, when I've played them.
ordinary guys in extraordinary circumstances: Imp y Celyn (Discworld), Carl Arbogast (Sneakers), Larry Daley (Night at the Museum), Teppic (Discworld)
I'm not sure what it is about this character type that draws me in, but clearly I'm a sucker for it. Sometimes it's a lot of fun to play someone who doesn't have any fancy advantages on a day-to-day basis.
...Okay, so Teppic's an odd duck for that category, but he doesn't know what the hell to do with Djelibeybi, so I think he counts. XD
And I have to give a few words to Imp in particular, here, as it's been seven and a half years and I'm still fascinated by his story. Poor kid didn't know what he was getting into, doesn't remember it when all's said and done by my estimation, and needs the chance to make it in his own right.
the devious buggers: Cosmo (Sneakers), Regulus Black (Harry Potter), Crowley (Good Omens), Sam (Villains By Necessity)
Man, sometimes playing one of the bad guys is just fun. XD Half the fun's digging into what makes them tick; I play Regulus as slightly more lawful-neutral than canon implies, as I think he mostly joined the Death Eaters because his family egged him on, and playing Cosmo led me to the conclusion that he just wanted to talk to Marty and gave him multiple chances to catch on without going to all that box-stealing trouble. (See also: The only other person who calls Bishop 'Marty' is one of Cos's goons.)
And of course, whether Crowley can ultimately be considered a bad guy is a matter of debate, but he's got devious down to a fine art.
the ladies of little canon: Alexi Darling (Rent), Cata (Villains By Necessity), Conflict Diamond (Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog), Beverly (St Trinian's)
I love, love, love taking scraps of backstory and building characters around those scraps. Hell, in Conflict Diamond's case, I didn't even have scraps; I had a name and an idea of what the person with that name might be like, and I ran with it.
Alexi was in Milliways for plot purposes; she needed the reminder that she still had a softer side. (I also had a lot of fun actually playing that softer side in Otherways, back in the day.) Beverly is made of pure WIN. And Cata came from me wanting to explore what happened to all those whitewashed people when the spell broke, and how they regained their agency.
the role models: Angel Dumott Schunard (Rent), Rebecca St. Clair (Warehouse 13)
I want to be either or both of these people when I grow up. Angel has a deep sense of family, and takes care of that family no matter what; Rebecca is so many kinds of no-nonsense and practical, and I aspire to that level of taking care of business.
in a class by herself: Claudia Donovan (Warehouse 13)
Claudia comes so easily because I am a lot like her - in the good ways and the bad ways. She's near my age, she's smart, she's a geek, she's abrasive, she both doesn't give a damn and sorely wants approval from her chosen family... it's a combination of traits I understand very well.
alternate categories, for the hell of it:
*assassins (Cata, Sam, Teppic)
*computer people/computers (Carl, Cosmo, Claudia, Jarvis)
*C Is For Jill's Characters (Carl, Cosmo, Cata, Conflict Diamond, Claudia, Crowley)
...I am amused that most of those were groups of four.
