'Shi' in Japanese is the pronunciation for the kanji death, and is also one of two pronunciations for the number four (shi and yon). It is therefore an unlucky number. They skip the fourth floor and the fourth door in every hospital for that reason. Also, just completely randomly, white is the colour of death and mourning, not black. Does that help anyone?
